Job overview

After a period of substantial investment in the finance team, and by bolstering resources, this fantastic position has been created to work in an ambitious team to continue making improvements in the financial support of key Trust projects and business cases.

The post will support the Deputy Project Accountant and Project Accountant in providing overall financial support to key Trust projects and the development of the long term financial plan.

This will include financial and non-financial reporting, to include business case production, and the financial impact of major projects within the monthly reporting and forecasting, and annual and long term planning processes.

The post holder will be vital to the team in shaping the vision shared by the Director of Finance in growing and developing the financial support for projects at the Trust in order to set a benchmark to which other NHS organisations will aspire. 

We are looking for a motivated, conscientious and positive individual, with a strong educational background and with some finance and hopefully capital experience, who is organised, professional and shares a desire to learn and improve both as a team and an individual.

Main duties of the job

The core responsibility for the post holder will be to assist with the financial reporting of the Trust’s capital programme by working closely with the team and project leads to deliver an exciting capital agenda over the coming years.

Away from the core role, the post holder will support the strengthening of the business case process to ensure that all decisions are accurately captured and recorded.

The post holder will have a strong educational background with hopefully some financial qualification or studying towards. They must have some accounting background and ideally have worked in the NHS for at least 2 years, preferably in a capital/project accounting capacity.

The role will require the person to be able to analyse and interpret large complex data so a high level of numeracy and Microsoft Excel skills are a must.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Assistant Project Accountant will work within a three person project accounting team headed up by the Project Accountant. This post will report to the Deputy Project Accountant.

The detailed duties and responsibilities under the leadership/guidance and support from the Project Accountant and Deputy Project Accountant are:

Project Accounting 

Assist with the financial reporting of the Trust’s capital programme, the production of the monthly project progress reports and circulation of monthly budget statements to project leads.

Review and be responsible for prompt and accurate entry of transactions to the financial ledger to ensure that the financial position for capital projects is accurately reflected within the monthly reported position. Investigating and correcting where this is not the case.

Review the financial ledger to ensure that the expenditure that is against capital projects is in line with accounting standards and Trust accounting policies.

To work closely with the project leads to investigate, summarise and challenge any variances to plan or latest forecasts, identifying the causes.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • 5 GCSE’s or equivalent including Maths, English and IT (Grade C/Grade 4 and above)
Desirable criteria
  • AAT Member/AAT Qualified or NVQ Level 4 or equivalent
  • Studying or desire to study for a CCAB Qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Practical application of basic accounting concepts and techniques
  • Experience of working to tight deadlines.
  • Experience of dealing with conflict and prioritising demands.
Desirable criteria
  • Finance experience within the NHS or a large finance department
  • Some finance experience within the NHS capital accounting

Knowledge/Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to analyse, interpret and report large complex data
  • High level of numeracy and accuracy skills.
  • Advanced knowledge and highly skilled in the use of MS Excel.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Desirable criteria
  • An understanding of strategic and operational planning, budgeting and performance monitoring, project accounting and business case development.
