Job overview

This post is an exciting opportunity for 2 full time Registered Dental Nurses to join a multidisciplinary team and support the speciality to ensure the provision of a high standard of patient care. This is a great opportunity for you to develop and expand your skills as a dental nurse to the next level .

We offer flexible working to meet the demands of the service and we would consider part time hours and job share.

Clinics you will assist in our Oral surgery, Skin  procedures under local anaesthetic , Orthodontics and specialised clinics such as Orthognathic, Alveolar, Implants and Cleft lip and Palate.

You will need to be a highly motivated and confident member of the team .Our patients will expect and will receive the highest standards of professional care by all members of the team.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be a Registered Dental nurse interested in developing the service to our patients. We would welcome any applications for this Band 4 role for those with experience in Dental nursing and or Orthodontics .

We would also consider newly qualified Dental nurses with the relevant experience. We are seeking a highly motivated, enthusiastic and a compassionate nurse with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to help us to deliver outstanding treatment and care to our patients. You will be responsible for the setting up and closing/cleaning down of your surgery and maintaining stock levels. Assisting clinicians in all clinics within our specialty. We are looking for someone who is team focused.

Working for our organisation

We have 21 Registered Dental Nurses, 3 Staff Nurses, 2 trainee nursing associates, 1 Healthcare Assistant and 1 study model /stores administrative assistant working within a very busy outpatients department. The oral and maxillofacial and orthodontics department work with a multidisciplinary team which covers a variety of head and neck procedures. We also have Dental Core Trainees in the department and a strong training ethos.

This is a cross-site specialty with all staff required to work at both Cheltenham General Hospital & Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. Free transport is provided for trust staff by shuttle-bus between the two sites. There may also be a requirement to work in Cirencester in the future on a regular basis.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder is responsible for cleaning and maintaining a safe working environment using measures to reduce cross infection as per Trust policy.

Communicate effectively with patients, carers, relatives and all members of the multidisciplinary team, including giving of advice and information following procedures or relating to specialist conditions, including emotionally distressing situations.

To organise and provide chair-side nursing in orthodontic and oral surgery clinics.

To act as a scrub nurse and assist with procedures under local anaesthetic, lasting up to an hour.

To organise, prepare and assist with specialist clinics e.g., Orthognatic, oncology, alveolar, cleft lip and palate.

Provide care, under supervision for patients with appearance altering conditions such as Cleft palate, facial cancers and facial trauma.

Prepare medical and orthodontic notes for clinics including obtaining investigation results from computerised systems e.g., MRI and CAT scans.

Obtaining prostheses from the maxilla-facial laboratory.

Responsible for recording and storage of patient study models of patients currently undergoing treatment

Work on either site as the workload demands and on the instruction of the nurse in charge. Take on responsibility for personal development and support the development and supervision of others by developing and maintaining specialist knowledge of Therapy practice

Conduct oneself in a professional manner and be a role model to less experiences/ non registered and new staff at all times

Work proactively to ensure that every patient attendance meets the patient’s expectations and needs with timely undertaking of procedure and effective communication with relatives, patients and carers.

Essential criteria
  • Active registration with the GDC
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development through maintenance of professional portfolio and registration revalidation
Desirable criteria
  • Additional qualification in dental radiography, OHE or sedation


Essential criteria
  • Experience (through placement or employment) of working in an dental environment
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience in a Orthodontics desirable
  • Previous experience working in a surgical environment

  • Able to effectively and appropriately escalate concerns to reduce risk and promote patient safety
Desirable criteria

  • Skilled in four –handed dentistry
  • Demonstrates ability to keep up to date with professional issues that influence Dental /orthodontic practice
  • Enhanced levels of dexterity and accuracy pertaining to clinical skill e.g., loading orthodontic brackets.
