Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a permanent Band 6 position on Mayhill unit. We are seeking an experienced Registered Nurse who is looking for an opportunity to develop their Leadership and Management skills within an established and welcoming team. You must be able to work autonomously and as part of a team to provide excellent nursing care to patients from all surgical specialties. You will be expected to coordinate the Ward and take charge in the absence of the Senior Sister. Key aspects of the role include supporting your junior colleagues whilst facing the challenges of a busy Surgical Ward, facilitating student placements and allocation of mentors. You will be given the opportunity to develop skills in rostering, sickness management, recruitment, appraisals and Datix investigation. All relevant training will be provided. 

Main duties of the job

You should possess the ability to coordinate and lead the team on a daily basis in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care with the multi-disciplinary team. You should be able to communicate effectively, especially where patient ability to do so is compromised. You will be expected to lead by example, promoting at all times the Trusts standards whilst ensuring that patient safety is at the forefront of any decisions.

JOB PURPOSE

To manage and professionally lead the Mayhill Unit team in the clinical area in the absence of the senior nurse and as part of the multidisciplinary team. To deliver and supervise patient care for the clinical area ensuring assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of a high standard of nursing care.

To manage caseload of patients within defined clinical area.

DIMENSIONS

To organise own time and that of junior staff and students. To support the senior members of staff in the management and supervision of the defined clinical area.

Matron. B7 Ward Manager. B6 Sister. Coordinator. Registered Nurse. HCA. Student Nurses/Apprentice HCA.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council with appropriate teaching/assessing qualification.  

Band 5 substantial qualified post registration experience.

Evidence of post registration qualification/equivalent.

Enhanced IT skills. Enhanced levels of dexterity and accuracy pertaining to clinical skills.

Act as a role model and resource for all staff disseminating clinical skills and knowledge.

To participate in own and teams personal and professional development.  

Ensuring progression through Individual Performance Development review and PREP guidelines.

Demonstrate understanding of research and evidence based practice, and participate as required in audit.

Act as a skilled assistant.

MOST CHALLENGING PART OF YOUR JOB

Ability to lead a team and work under pressure in an ever changing, challenging environment maintaining excellent standards of patient care whilst effectively managing own and others time.

Resolving difficult situations/people. Maintaining throughput of patients.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORKING CONDITIONS.

Will be required to work within recognized Manual Handling Guidelines.

May be expected to frequently manoeuvre patients/objects over 15kg using appropriate aids for short periods of time.

Will have frequent exposure to unpleasant working conditions and will be required to follow Policies and Procedures pertaining to infestations, bodily fluids, infection control and COSHH regulations.

May be required to work in confined spaces.

Ability to work where the work pattern may be unpredictable, but there is also frequent exposure to distressing situations involving patients, relatives and staff.
