The Professional Education Manager is an exciting, stimulating and varied role supporting the Head of professional Education, Apprenticeships & Careers, in the design, delivery and evaluation of innovative and research led professional education and workforce development.

The post-holder will develop and maintain strong, productive working relationships across our Trust, being a visible and accessible presence. The role includes managing the Professional Education Practitioners, Professional Education Simulation Fellow and Clinical Skills Team, leading on the Preceptorship programme amongst other education and development initiatives, and working Simulation Based Education into Non-Medical education and development.

The role exists to provide high quality and up-to-date education and training to our non-medical workforce enabling them to deliver our vision of providing Best Care for Everyone, achieve our strategic People and OD objectives and ensure GHFT leads on the delivery of the Long-Term Plan.

The Professional Education Manager will support the provision and continual improvement of appropriate, high quality in-house education and development activity, facilitating the incorporation of Simulation based Education.

The post-holder will continue to build on and develop high-quality opportunities available (including Preceptorship and Clinical Skills training) to attract our future workforce and retain our current workforce.

Main duties of the job

The Professional Education Manager is required to:

- Develop a highly motivated, skilled and engaged team committed to delivering best care for everyone

- Communicate complex messages effectively and productively with a range of staff at all levels in the Trust up to Board and Non-Executive Director level as well as with our partnering organisations in health and education.  This includes a wide range of methods to communicate including business cases/reports, formal presentations to large numbers of people and more intense one to one interaction.

- Build and maintain positive and productive working relationships within the organisation and with Higher and Further Education Institutions and other education/training providers

- Build strong networks with other Professional Education professionals in Health Education England – South West

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

- Design, deliver and evaluate education activity that supports Trust Strategic objectives and aligns to the continuing transformation of GHFT and its services

- Contribute to the development of a learning organisation and Best Care for Everyone through appropriate Education and Development interventions that enable safety, compassionate care and personal and organisational growth.

- Ensure the continual improvement of the professional education service.

- Maximise the opportunities presented through Preceptorship Programme, Clinical Skills training and in-house education to support recruitment and retention within the organisation.

- Support the Chief Nurse, wider Education and Development team and Trust leaders in the development of career pathways for our non-medical workforce

Person specification


Essential criteria
  • Active registration with the NMC
  • Degree or equivalent in a relevant subject
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development through maintenance of professional portfolio and registration revalidation
Desirable criteria
  • Post Graduate Qualification in a relevant field


Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in an acute clinical environment
  • Previous experience in healthcare education

  • Acts as a role model and are able to lead by example to ensure the Trust’s values and behaviours are reinforced throughout their area of practice.

  • Demonstrates ability to keep up to date with professional issues that influence practice relating to area of clinical practice, management, education and research.
  • Able to contribute to the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policies/protocols/guidelines relevant to area of practice.
