Main duties of the job

Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements:

  • To ensure the provision of a first class clinical service
  • To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty
  • To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate
  • To undertake all work in accordance with the Trust’s procedures and operating policies
  • To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust’s and Division’s service plans
  • To support the delivery of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Diagnostic and Specialities Division or the Trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Job purpose

The successful candidate will join an established team within the Trust, working closely with Oncology and other specialities within the Trust as required.

The post-holder will provide specialist Haematology services, together with appropriate teaching and supervision of junior doctors and medical students.  He/she will be expected to work closely with general practitioners and hospital-based medical and laboratory staff to provide a seamless service and deliver high quality patient care.

Clinical responsibilities

  • The appointee will be expected to share responsibility for the delivery of high quality care to patients presenting to the Department with Haematological disorders
  • To examine and treat both inpatients and outpatients under the care of the Department
  • To support the clinical decision making of junior medical and nursing staff
  • To provide on call support out of hours to Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. To remain contactable and available when on call.
  • To carry out ward rounds as scheduled

The post is a general Haematology post covering all areas of district general Haematology practice.  However, a sub-specialist interest would be welcomed to complement the sub-specialist interests of the existing Haematology Consultant establishment.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration and a licence to practise
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via • CCT or CESR (CP) (proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date must be within 6 months of interview) • CESR or European Community Rights
  • Higher qualifications equivalent to: MRCP MRCPath (Haematology)
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree Teaching qualification

Clinical experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of recent experience of caring for haematology patients to level 3
  • Demonstration of ability to work with colleagues within the department, in management, nursing and other specialties to ensure the delivery of a high quality, safe and reliable service. Familiar with clinical governance with evidence of participation in audit and clinical governance programmes
Desirable criteria
  • A subspecialty expertise/ interest
  • IT skills including database management and word processing skills
  • Attendance on a management course
