Applications are invited for the role of Chief of Service of the Medicine Division.  We are looking for an enthusiastic, innovative and progressive clinical leader to join the established divisional team.

Clinical staff from any professional background, regardless of their specialist interest, will be considered.  You will be expected to have a genuine commitment to our Trust, and determination to continuously improve the quality of care within the Division.  In addition you will be expected to support cohesive collaboration, working with all other divisions and colleagues.

We are looking for a highly capable individual who can lead the Division through the current pressures, especially the challenges of urgent and emergency care, and deliver our plans for the further development of our services as part of Fit for the Future.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder provides strategic and clinical leadership for the Division.  They will seek to ensure that the Division provides effective and efficient patient services of the highest quality within available resources.  Strong clinical engagement is central to the management of the Division.  They will contribute corporately to the management of the Trust on a day-to-day basis and the strategic direction of the organisation.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Service delivery – provision of effective and efficient patient services, of a high quality, responsive to patient and commissioner needs whilst achieving key access and other target

Financial management – achievement of income plans, effective budgetary control, delivery of Divisional Financial Sustainability Plans and high standards of financial probity.  

Service improvement – establishment of a culture of, and effective processes to achieve, continuous improvement in the quality and efficiency of services, with appropriate involvement from patients and the public.  This should be undertaken in by linking with the Trust Quality Academy

Clinical governance - ensuring that robust processes are in place to minimise risks to patients and staff whilst optimising clinical effectiveness

Planning – preparing and implementing short and longer term plans consistent with the Trust’s strategy, covering inter alia service standards and volumes, workforce, equipment and estates and income

Leadership – inspire teams and individuals whilst ensuring good communications across the Division.  Delegate to and support sub-divisional teams with effective performance management arrangements

Partnership – contribute fully to the leadership and management of the Trust as a whole, working for the common good with other Divisions, Trustwide teams and Trust Directors.  Build effective working relationships with GPs, stakeholders, Regulators and other system wide partners

Staffing – ensure that the Division organises well to achieve the appropriate level of clinical cover and job plans which meet the needs of the individual and the Trust. Develop workforce plans to ensure the right staffing numbers and skill mix to meet the current and developing needs of the service. Meet high standards for training, appraisals and general staff engagement

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview
  • Evidence of continuing personal and professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of clinical strategy development
  • Experience of developing new models of care and implementing service redesign inside and across directorate/organisational boundaries
  • Service and business planning
