Job overview


Tracheostomy/Airway Lead

To support the trust in developing gold standards of care for patients with a tracheostomy both within the hospital setting and as part of their follow up care. This will include but not limited to the raining of staff from all disciplines of the MDT, maintaining an overview of the latest research and guidelines for the management of tracheostomies and airway management with a particular interest in the post-operative care pathway.

Main duties of the job

The post holders will be responsible for:

  • To support the training of staff who care for patients with tracheostomies and laryngectomies including those patients that have undergone major head and neck surgery with flaps. This includes Medical staff, Nursing staff, Physiotherapists, dieticians and other members of the MDT.
  • Tailor a training package to support staff at various levels trust wide. To deliver at least 1 trust wide altered airway and tracheostomy management course per annum.
  • Review and maintain clinical competencies for staff involved in looking after patients with tracheostomies and laryngectomies.
  • To ensure that their Specialty Director is able to update the Board on any service developments.
  • To ensure that specialty information is saved into the shared drive.
  • To maintain up to date knowledge on current guidelines and support policy writing.
  • To attend speciality meetings and wider national initiatives
  • Attendance should be both cross county and multi-disciplinary
  • Ensure a robust process for communicating developments to the entire team.
  • This post may require attendance at Divisional Quality Board is required as specified by the Division where appropriate/necessary
  • Investigate and support learning from datix involving the care of tracheostomies/altered airways
  • Take part in local and national audit and research.
  • Establish links with universities who may support research in this area

Qualifications & Clinical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Clinician / Nurse (Band 7+) of at least 12 months demonstrating extensive experience in the management of tracheostomies/laryngectomies and management of patient undergoing major head and neck surgery with flap
