Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual to undertake a secondment or fixed term for 12 months appointment as a Professional Education Simulation Fellow within the Professional Education Team at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

This role is fully funded by Health Education England to enable the research, imbedding and culture change to focus of learning objectives of education via simulation based education, including technology enhanced learning and human factors for the non-medical workforce. 

This post requires a creative and innovative individual who will be integral to the research and subsequent implementation of simulation based education in all non-medic education and practice education provided by the education and development department and practice educators, to collaborate within the HEE Simulation network and ICS and present their research locally and nationally.

This role is a secondment/fixed term position for 12 months.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for someone who is ambitious, self-motivated, organised with excellent education and communication skills and who has a passion for research and evaluating educational and learning methods. This individual will be someone who holds a demonstrable interest and experience in education, simulation based education, human factors and technology enhanced learning. With experience or knowledge of the various non-medic education and development opportunities provided by the Trust; such as preceptorship, care certificate, international nurses and ward based education. 

The individual will have a current registration with the NMC/HCPC and a first degree or evidence of studying at this level. This appointment can be a nurse, midwife or AHP.

The Professional Education Simulation Fellow secondment is funded by Health Education England and exists to research plan and help deliver excellent simulation based education and development activity for the non-medical workforce, in support of Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Pathway to Excellence and the achievement of the People and Organisational Development Strategy: Caring for those who care, specifically the enabling pillars of Workforce Sustainability, Colleague Experience and Transformation.

Leadership and management:

The role is underpinning by the delivery of following:

• Interact clinically to identify development / support needs of students / learners/ apprentices, practice assessors, practice supervisors, mentors to target / direct support or escalate to Academic Institutions (Zoned academics, Coaches in Practice or Academics in practice)
• Network locally, regionally and nationally and communicate complex ideas and concepts between the clinical environments, Academic Education Institutions and the wider health care community (‘One Gloucestershire’ Integrated Care System)
• Represent Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Trust at meetings with Academic Education Institutions and the wider health care community (‘One Gloucestershire’ Integrated Care System) as required enabling a positive partnership approach across the system. 

To effectively support the development of the non-clinical workforce, professional education practitioners, practice development and practice educators, clinical educators, mentors, students and other learners in practice, 
the post holder will:

• Be responsible for the ongoing implementation and management of the Standards of proficiency for registered nurses (2018) and equivalent for other health professions across GHNHSFT
• Attend relevant funded SBE/TEL train the trainer courses for CPD
• Participate within the HEE Simulation Network and report regularly on the project findings.
• Support the Head of Professional Education Apprenticeships and Careers Team to ensure that the NMC Quality Assurance Framework (2018) and any other relevant professional body’s quality standards and measures are successfully implemented with effective partnership working between our partner Academic Educational Institutions and Health Education England
• Engage with professional Education Practitioners, Practice Educators, Practice Development, and Clinical Skills, to support SBE and TEL in classroom and ward areas.
• Collaborate with Professional Education Practitioners, Practice Educators, Practice Development to enhance educational settings and environments to promote learning for all staff students and learners. 
• Undertake Human Factors awareness for SBE and TEL
• Collaborate with Professional Education Managers to plan, deliver and evaluate SBE and TEL in International Recruitment OSCE Educational Programmes.
• Collaborate with Practice Educators to plan, deliver and evaluate SBE and TEL in Care Certificate programmes.
• Collaborate with the Professional Education Facilitators to ensure Student placement experience includes SBE and TEL opportunities and feedback within the student forum.
• To work in conjunction with the Professional Education Practitioners to imbed SBE and TEL in Preceptorship Programmes for Adult and Paediatric Nursing and ODPs.
• Collaborate with the Head of Professional Education to ensure that SBE and TEL is as a standing agenda within the Preceptorship Council.
• To work with Preceptorship programme leads within GHFT to imbed SBE and TEL towards the GHFT Preceptorship Academy
• Ensure the provision of a comprehensive selection of learning environments which support staff to develop professionally 
• Establish and maintain links with Academic Education Institutions to
• support the appropriate Simulation Based Education and Technology Enhanced Learning
• ensure communication regarding research and evaluation of the project 
• Work collaboratively with students, newly registered clinicians, established clinicians specialist clinicians and managers to promote a culture of simulation based education from low fidelity to MDT learning, as well as the development of clinical excellence and competency in safe and professional practice
• Work collaboratively with Professional Education Practitioners, Practice Educators, Practice Development Educators, Clinical Educators, Professional Education Facilitators, managers and academic staff to conduct and respond to feedback, evaluation and educational audits.
• Participate in the development of and support key partnership working to ensure that simulation based education is enhanced by developing a shared approach and commitment between service and education for the integration of both the theoretical and practice elements of educational programmes.
• Monitor and evaluate clinical standards, through clinical presence, observation, student/learner feedback and evaluation.
• Identify and develop areas of poor practice in conjunction with , Professional Education Practitioners, managers, supervisors and assessors to improve patient experience
• Deliver accurate and comprehensive reports and data to the Chief Nurse, Associate Director of Education and Development Service, Head of Professional Education, Apprenticeships and Careers Team or Health Education England as requested
• Explore and develop opportunities for inter professional learning 
• To work with University of Gloucestershire (UoG), which is the HEI within our One Gloucestershire ICS, to include the needs of students and ongoing training from student clinician to new registrant (NRN, AHP etc) in SBE.

Education and training / Improving quality and developing practice
The role is underpinning by the delivery of following:

The post holder will be expected to:

• Work collaboratively with the Professional Education Managers and Practice Development Managers to ensure all non-medical education and development is identified for SBE and TEL
• Work in collaboration with all educators within the Trust to research and evaluate SBE and TEL in Professional Education and CPD activities. 
• A Quality Improvement Project is undertaken to evaluate SBE, TEL 
• Practice Educators and developed and supported in a manner that is consistent with NMC and HEE standards and frameworks, local education quality standards and any education contract requirements 
• Advise, develop and ensure quality of learning opportunities within an intra-professional framework in order that the service users receive a high standard of care
• Lead the planning, delivery and evaluation of non-medic professional education, practice development and CPD training sessions to staff and students across the Trust and wider One Gloucestershire ICS, promoting evidenced based practice and assisting in the development of new and improved practices 
• Ensure comprehensive evaluation of content, methods of delivery and impact occurs which informs subsequent delivery
• Establish and build networks between One Gloucestershire ICS, HEIs, Health Education England (HEE) and educational colleagues across the region
• Compile data and reports regarding SBE and TEL as required by Health Education England 
• Actively seek, expand and develop new educational opportunities for non-medical learners across the organisation
• Monitor, audit and evaluate specific non-medic SBE and TEL activities to ensure compliance with educational standards 
• Monitor student feedback within the student and direct care nurses, midwives and AHP’s within the Educators forum, Preceptorship Council, and Education and Development Council.
• Liaise with the Lead Nurse for Continuous Practice Development and Head of Professional Education to ensure the relevant skills acquisition and Training needs are identified for SBE
• Develop effective relationships with non-medic educators  to inform and guide the development in practice education areas 
• Increasing and widening access to SBE aiming to educate and improve awareness of and utilisation of non-technical skills in health care professionals primarily from a non-medic background. 
• Improve and increase non-technical skills based training via an understanding of human factors 
• Link with the current wider Human Factors based awareness and education being designed to implement for non-medic health care professionals.
• To assist in the use of SBE applications through the use of iPads and other TEL and to ascertain/improve our ability to move forwards with virtual SBE with involvement from Training Systems and the e-learning technologists.

  • Current NMC / HCPC Professional Registration
  • First degree or evidence of studying at this level
  • Proven evidence of recent and ongoing CPD and understanding of revalidation requirements
  • Evidence of an demonstrable interest in Research
  • Significant awareness of and experience of Simulation Based Education
  • Experience of working in a NHS provider setting or HEI
  • Demonstrable experience in educating clinical staff using a variety of educational method
  • An understanding of, or willingness to learn key elements within the HEE Education and ASPiH standards
  • Experience of Quality Improvement processes
  • Enhanced interpersonal skills to handle group facilitation, education and development of clinical staff
  • Strong interest into research methods and research projects
  • Strong report writing abilities and confidence to present project findings
